Infra Red Standing Stones and Landscapes

I take only two types of infra red landscape photograph. I am fascinated with standing stones and as you will see from the image above, they make a stunning subject when photographed with infra red film. I have tried to capture the mysterious majesty of these ancient landmarks with the ever changing sky.

I have been photographing standing stones for over 20 years. Using black and white and Infra red photography an aura or glow in white can be achieved around the top of the stones. I have a picture of Stonehenge taken with a fisheye lens against a clear blue sky, studded with white cumulonimbus clouds.

Infra red film lends itself to capturing a mysterious otherworld quality, especially in old graveyards, ruined churches and other buildings. In Southern Ireland places like this can be found. Stones which held significance for the ancients on rocky shores and thus combine with the calm and the roar of the sea. The Sea and the sky and a hint of the small impact of man make for a romantic vision in these environmentally conscious times.
